What do Alumni say about NIDM online courses?

Online NIDM courses remind me of the famous dictum regarding 'Education', Education does not begin with the learning of the alphabet. It begins with a mother's look, a father's node of approbation, a sister's gentle pressure of the hand, a brother's noble act of forbearance.” Having completed one online course and quarter way through the present course on risk sensitive land use planning, I am of the opinion that the courses are extremely useful. The presentations are treasure-troves of knowledge, the discussion forum is brimming with activity and the assignment and end of course project are real testing grounds of the level of skill earned. The courses, no doubt, ring an alarm bell. They highlight persistent and self defeating neglect of the disaster mitigation issues in planning disclosure and action in spite of the overwhelming intensity of the problems that they represent. They highlight the need to move from rhetoric to action. I have no option but to reframe the famous lines below to give you a bird's eye view of NIDM courses:

“In some faint dawn
In some dim eve
Like a gesture of light
Like a dream of delight…..”

Hats off to the NIDM team. - Mr. Raju Narayan Swamy, IAS; (Secretary to the Govt. of Kerala).

Being an Architect, I always felt like contributing in Disaster Risk Mitigation by designing Risk Resilient Buildings and promoting students to adopt best practices in Structural Mitigation through Architectural design. NIDM has provided opportunity to actualize these thoughts by providing facts, figures , learning materials, focused and dedicated faculty and coordinators who are guiding so well and available every moment online. This online course has given the golden opportunity to upgrade myself under the umbrella of most reputed institutions of the world like the World Bank Institute, Washington, the National Institute of Disaster Management and GFDRR without hampering me on professional Front and daily schedule.
- Prof. Rashmi Ashtt, Principal, Sat Priya School Of Architecture And Design, Rohtak,Haryana.

I am an Armed Forces Officer serving in the Indian Air Force for the last one decade. I have been involved in the Disaster Management activity more than a couple of times. I came to know about the Online Course on Comprehensive Natural Disaster Risk Management Framework through the print media.

The course content available online in the website gave me the flexibility to access the study material wherever I traveled. The Discussion Forum also gave me an opportunity to broaden my learning aptly assisted by the facilitators review regularly, who kept encouraging us to broaden our horizon through active participation. The helpful attitude of the Programme Manager, Task Manager and the Facilitators deserve a certain mention. Thank you NIDM – WBI to provide me a hassle free environment to understand and learn the DM concepts in a very meaningful manner.
- Squadron leader PN Subramaniam, Deputy Director (Indian Air Force), New Delhi.

This is a very good initiative taken by government of India and World Bank Institute. The uniqueness of these courses is that, it is completely online and so, has a global reach. Any individual residing in any state/country can have an access of full knowledge and new experience through this learning environment. It also teaches individual participant to be more disciplined and punctual. This is the beginning of a new horizon towards a disaster free world. - Ms. Yamani Singh, Student.
