The National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) is one of the pioneer institutes under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India which has been mandated to promote capacity building interventions in Disaster Risk Management (DRM). Since its inception, the Institute has been proactive in raising the level of Awareness and Preparedness in dealing with disasters and emergency situations in the country, as well as making DRM education accessible to people across different level of stakeholders. The Institute owes its origin in April, 1995 when a National Centre for Disaster Management (NCDM) was set up within Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) by the Ministry of Agriculture & Cooperatives, which had the nodal responsibility for disaster management in the country. Following the transfer the subject of disaster management from the Ministry of Agriculture to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the NCDM was delinked from the IIPA and rechristened as the ‘National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM)’ under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The NIDM acquired a statutory status after the promulgation of Disaster Management Act in 2005. The prime mandates of the NIDM under the Act are: training, capacity building, research, documentation and policy advocacy on disaster management.
NIDM conducts nearly a hundred class room based programmes both in and off campus for various stakeholders on a wide range of subjects related to disaster risk management. NIDM further supports about 30 Disaster Management Centres in the Administrative Training Institutes of the State Governments and Union Territories across the country. Nearly 750 training programmes are conducted in these Centres annually. Besides conducting face to face programmes, the NIDM has also been conducting online as well as self study Programmes specifically designed for distantly located stakeholders across the country. NIDM has also been functioning as a “think tank” for the Central and state governments as well as local authorities for providing support and technical advices on Disaster Risk Reduction/Management Strategies. NIDM conducted studies for various commissions, committees and expert bodies on different aspects of disaster management. |
